Ecuador Earthquake 2010. The U.S. Geological Survey has increased the magnitude of the earthquake that struck Ecuador this morning from 6.9 to 7.1.
The earthquake struck Ecuador at 7:54 a.m. EDT 6:54 a.m. local, this morning about 105 miles southeast of Quito and 85 miles east of Ambato, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. There were no initial reports of injuries or damage, according to Reuters.
The quake was strong enough to cause significant damage but was located at a low depth of 118 miles, significantly lessening its impact. Reports say the temblor was felt in Quito and in parts of northern Peru.
The USGS initially recorded the earthquake as 6.7 in magnitude, then raised that to 7.2, reduced it to 6.9 and now has raised it again to 7.1. No tsunami warning has been issued.
